Biography

The Greene family is saddened to announce the passing of Joan Catharine Greene, peacefully and surrounded by the love of her family at Soldier's Memorial Hospital on Wednesday September 27, 2023 at the age of 86. We take comfort in knowing that Joan is now reunited with her late husband and the love of her life, David Greene. Loving mother to Stephen (Joy) of Barrie and Glenn (Christine) of Ramara. Cherished grandmother of Mitchell (Lindsay), Mallory, Gibson (Danielle), Evyn (Chris) and Rachel (Matt).  Proud Great Grandma (Gigi) to Harlow and Myla. Dear daughter of the late William MacDonald and the late Jean & Frank Fortin. Cherished sister of the late Mervin and special sister in law of Pat MacDonald of Bracebridge, the late Merle and the late Andrea (Walter) Bunn of Orillia. Daughter in law of the late Albert and Margaret Greene and sister in law of Judy Maguire and Mike Greene.

She will also be missed by many special nieces and nephews, friends from snowmobiling, boating and the cottage, Orillia friends and neighbours, as well as her beloved cat Sammy.

We know she is now warmly hugging all those who have gone before her.

What a full and beautiful life Joan had. She was born in Madoc, ON and moved to Orillia in 1947. She married Dave in 1959 and raised her two boys. Later she enjoyed and helped raise 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She had a long successful career as an executive assistant at Kubota Faramet and had many outside interests and friends. Dave and Joan were avid curlers and enjoyed many years of boating in the summer and snowmobiling all winter in the hunt camp. Later, many special memories were made welcoming family and friends to their cottage on Bird Lake in Muskoka. She and Dave shared many memorable trips throughout the world but were always happy to return home to Fawn Bay and their busy social life in Orillia.

Joan enjoyed her retirement volunteering with Soldiers' Memorial Hospital and the Orillia Horticulture Society, as well as doing all her own gardening around her home. She was a superb entertainer and cook and provided countless amazing family and friend dinners at her home on Fawn Bay Road. She was always there to support her family and friends. Joan was the rock of our family. A strong woman with a fierce spirit and a sassy attitude - traits that she passed on to her granddaughters. Laughter was a constant in her life and she had a great sense of humour. She was so proud of her family - immediate and extended and she kept them close throughout her entire life. She cherished her friends. Joan will be forever missed.

A special thank you to her kind neighbours, Jutta and Konrad Brenner and also to Aunt Pat who supported her in her later years. Another thank you to the staff at Birchmere Retirement Residence especially staff members Debbie, Tatiana and Addey who provided the wonderful care she needed as she battled health issues this last year. Thank you also to the amazing staff at Soldiers Memorial Hospital who provided dignified and gentle care for Joan in her last days.

As per Joan's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Joan's life will be held on Saturday October 28 at Couchiching Golf and Country Club (370 Peter Street North, Orillia, Ontario) from 1-5PM. Joan did not want speeches but we will share some memories at 2:30. If desired, donations in memory of Joan may be made to the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Orillia SPCA.
