Janet

Janet MacNeil

May 14th 1946 — Jan 26th 2024 (77 years)

Biography

Janet Mary MacNeil, 77, formerly of Lantz, Nova Scotia, passed away on January 26, 2024 peacefully surrounded by her family after a brief battle with cancer. She was born to parents Clarence and Violet (nee Quaintance) Pelrine, on May 14, 1946  in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

She grew up in Fairview at the very end of Evans Ave overlooking the basin where you could watch the container ships unloading cargo from their patio. Janet had a brief career as a hairdresser before marrying Art and taking on the full time task of raising 4 children.

At a young age Janet's mother taught her to knit, crochet and sew which became a life long talent she loved to share with friends and family. Endlessly creative, Janet was the source of many a warm hat, mittens, scarfs, socks, sweaters, ponchos.... you name it, she knit it. They were highly anticipated Christmas presents to get you through the winter!

Her talents didn't end with knitting though! Blankets, quilts, a large variety of stuffed critters both big & small, baby clothes, home renovations and even reupholstering furniture. She was a master craftswoman.

She also, though she denied it, was quite the teacher! She held daily knitting sessions passing on her skills to the nurses and her fellow patients of the Veteran's Memorial Hospital.

With her husband Art, Janet became a member of the Bluegrass family making lifelong and dear friends. Many great memories made and times had over the years attending festivals & jamborees. Janet, though not a singer, was an avid fan who especially loved and took great pride in watching her granddaughter Melody grow up performing on stage with her Papa.

Janet is survived by her brother Michael Pelrine (Vicki), sister Peggy Clark (Ronnie), son Jeff (Donna), daughter Jill, granddaughter Melody, daughter Darlene (Greg) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

She was preceded in death by brother Robert Pelrine, husband Art MacNeil and son Tim MacNeil.

A celebration of life will take place this coming spring with the interment of ashes.

The family thanks all for their kind thoughts and wishes in this time and we especially thank the staff of the Veteran's Memorial Hospital for taking such great care of Janet in her last few months. Special thanks to Vicki Davis Pelrine and Glenda Sanford for being Mom's right and left hand women throughout it all.

Donations in her name can be made to your charity of choice, the Cancer Society Halifax or Diabetes Canada.
