Biography

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Dorain Violet Schmidt on May 19, 2024. Dorain was born September 27, 1955 in Vulcan, Alberta; the fourth child of Rolfee and Clara Jones. She grew into a remarkable woman, sharing her faith and gentle spirit with everyone she knew.

Dorain's passion for crocheting and canning was a testament to her creativity and nurturing nature. She poured her heart into every stitch creating beautiful works of art that brought joy and comfort to those around her. Dorain ensured every new baby in the family received a blanket, as well as family members. She even decided to ensure that every mother and newborn baby that went to the Lethbridge Pregnancy Care Center received a blanket, wrapping them in the light that was truly Dorain.

Her canning skills were second to none and every jar was made with intention and devotion to her family. Knowing that every time her son Shane came home, canned tomatoes must be served – she always made a few extra jars. Her talents were a reflection of her deep love for her family and friends, as she always sought to create something special for those, she held dear.

As a child of God, Dorain's faith was an integral part of her life. She walked with grace and humility, always seeking to serve others, and spread the love of Christ. Her deep faith was a source of strength and comfort, guiding her through life's challenges and triumphs. Dorain's unwavering commitment to her beliefs inspired all who knew her, and her legacy of faith will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Dorain's greatest joy in life was her family. She is survived by her loving husband, David Schmidt, who referred to her as “Honey Bunch” or his “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love”. David was her rock and constant companion for 36 years. Their love story was one of devotion, faith, respect, and joyful laughter.

She also leaves behind her adoring son, Shane Walker, and her daughter-in-law, Angela Modeste, who she loved as her own. Dorain's grandchildren, Cameron Modeste and Raine Walker, were the light of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them, creating memories that will be forever treasured. Raine still holds tight to her teddy bear that Gramma crocheted a beautiful sweater for.

Dorain also leaves behind her brothers Bob (Donna) Jones, and Kenny (Elaine) Jones, mother-In-Law Agnes Schmidt, sisters-In-Law Barbara Griffin, Donna (Casey) Schuerkogel, and Leah Rosbottom as well as nieces LeeAnn Hrycyk, Christa (Terry) Bergen, Lisa Griffin, and nephews Sandy (Maureen) Hrycyk, Michael (Denise) Jones, Nathan (Shelley) Stukart, Ronald (Meranda) Jones, Trevor Jones, Roy Griffin, Matthew Griffin, Brian Griffin, Phillip Schuerkogel, Daniel Schuerkogel, as well as many great nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

We would be remiss if we did not also include Dorain’s best friends and sisters-by-heart, Corrina (Mark) Johnson and Dorrie (Terry) St. Jean – these ladies shared a truly blessed friendship spanning many years. Both were created out of love while journeying the joys and hardships of this life. We know how very much this loss will be felt.

In life, we suffer the sorrow of losing loved ones and Dorain was pre-deceased by her parents Clara and Rolfee Elmer Jones, stepmother Jean (Connolly), sisters Gloria Hrycyk and Ruth (John) Stukart, as well as her brother’s-in-law Orest Hrycyk, Steve Griffin, Eric Rosbottom, nephews Victor Hrycyk and Christopher Jones, and father-in-law Curtis Schmidt.

Dorain's presence in our lives was a true blessing. Her warm smile, contagious laughter, and comforting hugs will be deeply missed. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel loved and valued, and her absence will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As we mourn the loss of this incredible woman, we find solace in the knowledge that her love and legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched. Dorain's compassion, generosity, and unwavering faith will forever be remembered and celebrated.

Rest in peace, our dear Dorain Violet Schmidt. You will always be loved, cherished, and missed beyond measure. Until we meet again, we will hold you close in our hearts and find comfort in the beautiful memories you have left behind.
