Biography

McKinnon, Donald Herman, age 100, died peacefully on Monday, May 20th, 2024 at the Veterans Memorial Building in Halifax. Our hearts ache. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, dad, and grandfather. Dad was a World War ll Veteran, serving in Europe for four years with the Cape Breton Highlanders.

Born in Mill Village, Nova Scotia on October 20, 1923, he was the son of Parker McKinnon and Mae [Hirtle] McKinnon.

Our Dad loved the outdoors, That was his happy place. He was an avid hunter,
fisherman, gardener, berry picker, and walker. In the summertime, he could often be found on the front deck enjoying the sunshine.

He is survived by his sons, Peter [Halifax], and Terry (Dianne) [Concession], daughter Nancie [Annapolis Royal], his brother Irving, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Madge, grandson Brandon, and sisters: Kathleen, Hilda, Ruth, Doris, Gloria and brothers: Frank, Max, Earl, Dennis, and Gene.

Dad was a quiet, patient man, with a great sense of humour. Children loved him, and he always enjoyed spending time with them.

We thank 5 East, Veterans Memorial Building staff for looking after Dad for the past year, and the kindness and empathy shown during his final days.

His body has been cremated. He asked that there not be a funeral or celebration of life. Family and friends celebrated his 100th birthday on October 20th, 2023. That was Dad's celebration of life. His ashes may be scattered at a later date.

Dad, you leave this world knowing that you are loved. You are forever in our Hearts.
