Identification and witnessing also takes place at the partner facility. If a person dies outside Scarborough, the cremation can be arranged at a partner facility in Burlington, North Bay, Peterborough, or Ottawa. This depends on location and logistics and is decided case-by-case in consultation with our client families.
Cremation involves reducing organic matter in a body using extreme heat. To prepare for this process, implants or items that may be dangerous to crematorium staff (e.g., pacemakers) or that the family does not want destroyed (e.g., jewelry) must be removed. Other materials, like metal fillings or clothes, remain with the body.
After preparation, the deceased person's body is exposed to high temperatures (760 to 980 C / 1400 to 1800 F) in a chamber. Organic matter is reduced to bone fragments, which are further mechanically reduced into a coarse grey or brown powder known as ashes or cremated remains. Non-combustible materials (e.g., dental fillings) are removed and recycled.
The cremated remains are placed in an urn or simple container, as directed by the family, and returned as below.
After cremation, the ashes are picked up by our staff from the crematorium partner, and an appointment is made with families for in-person delivery. Urns will never be left on someone's doorstep or in a mailbox. This is the standard in all our locations.
The ashes are delivered along with important documentation (e.g., death certificates) needed to handle estate matters. However, expedited delivery through Canada Post's Express Post mail service is available if needed sooner.
A link to create an account with Eirene's partner, Cadence, will also be shared with loved ones. Cadence is a service that assists families with after-death matters.
