Families planning a cremation in Cornwall, Ontario, sometimes have questions about the process. This guide explains what to expect.

When a loved one dies, it can be challenging to plan a cremation while grieving. However, understanding what to expect beforehand can help make the process less daunting. To that end, our staff at Eirene provides ongoing support and guidance throughout the arrangement process, and we have outlined the steps to arrange a cremation in Cornwall, Ontario.

Making cremation arrangements in Cornwall

The process for arranging a cremation with Eirene is straightforward yet caring and compassionate. One of the unique features we offer allows families to make arrangements online through our website. An in-person meeting with our staff to make final arrangements is unnecessary.

Our website is also filled with helpful and informative end-of-life resources. Clients can visit the website to learn more about Eirene, check out our blog and help centre, or browse the online urn catalog. The catalog features a wide selection of urns suited to different needs and budgets. We also offer free shipping to Cornwall (and all Canadian addresses) with a purchase of $100 or more.

Itemized arrangement packages can also be found on the website by clicking on "services" or "pricing" in the top menu. In Cornwall, we offer cremation and aquamation services. Eirene also provides prepaid arrangement services.

Click on "Start Arranging" in the top right corner of the webpage to begin the arrangement process. Choose the option that best suits your needs. Then provide the information requested to proceed with Eirene's services. These forms can be completed by a family member and if needed our staff is available to provided assistance. If preferred, arrangements can be made via phone, email, or video conferencing.

Contact our team at 647-955-4375 or via email at support@eirene.ca for assistance. A licensed funeral director will take client information over the phone and outline the steps to complete arrangements in the province. In-person meetings at Eirene's office in downtown Hamilton are also available upon request and by appointment only. However, Cornwall is about a five-hour drive from Hamilton, so online or over the phone is likely the best option for Cornwall families.

Once arrangements have been made, our staff corresponds with our partner location in Orléans, an Ottawa suburb (just over an hour from Cornwall). The partner location handles transportation, cremation, and the return of cremated remains to the family. However, Eirene's staff coordinates all services for the client's family.

Transferring your loved one in Cornwall

Upon confirmation of Eirene's services, our staff facilitates transportation and cremation services. The transfer service will transport the deceased person's body to our partner facility in Orléans.

Transporting a deceased person's body in a private vehicle is also legal in Ontario. Contact Eirene's team to discuss these arrangements if desired.

Documentation and logistics in Cornwall

Eirene handles most of the cremation documentation, planning, and logistics, such as completing cremation paperwork, collection payments, obtaining a burial permit, etc. (Learn more here.)

Once the paperwork is completed and payment is received, our team will contact the crematorium partner in Ottawa. Eirene offers an arrangement package allowing families to identify their loved one before cremation or witness the cremation container being placed in the retort (cremation chamber). Families may also be able to initiate the cremation process. (More information on the "Witnessing" package is here).

If a person dies outside Cornwall, cremation may be arranged in the Orleans facility. However, this depends on location and logistics and would be determined on a case-by-case basis and in consultation with our client family. Services may also be referred to Eirene's partner locations in Peterborough, North Bay, and Burlington.

Cremation process

The next step in our arrangement process is to prepare for cremation. This mainly involves removing medical implants (e.g., defibrillators) that may pose a safety risk to crematorium staff. Jewelry is also removed and returned. Other metals (e.g., fillings) and combustible materials (e.g., clothing) remain on the body.

During the cremation process, the deceased person's body is exposed to extreme heat (around 760 to 980 Celsius / 1400 to 1800 F) in a chamber. As a result, organic matter is reduced, leaving behind bone fragments and non-combustible materials.

Metals are removed and recycled after a cooling period. Bone fragments are reduced to a grey or brown powder known as cremated remains or ashes. Cremated remains are placed in an urn or container and returned to the family (as discussed below).

Returning your loved ones' ashes

After cremation, our staff makes an appointment with the family to ensure an in-person delivery of ashes by our local partner. Cremated remains will never be left on someone's doorstep or in a mailbox. This is standard in all locations we service.

Our staff will also send documentation needed to handle estate matters (e.g., death certificates) to the deceased person's family via Canada Post Express Post. We also share a link to create an account with Cadence, which assists families with after-death matters.
